Autonomy Releases The First Intelligent Internet Software To Deliver Personalized Information On Demand
Autonomy's Agentware 1.1 responds to plain English queries; searches for concepts, not keywords; automatically learns user preferences to deliver personalized information on demand.
March 10, 1997 - Los Angeles, CA. At Internet World today, Autonomy, Inc. unleashed Agentware 1.1, the first-ever product that delivers personalized information from the Internet by learning the preferences and needs of the user. This follows hot on the heels of News Corporation's adoption of Agentware i3™ server technology and Autonomy as its personalization partner.
"Users want products and services that do more than address the management of information. I believe that Autonomy's focus on the individual and on personalization technology will make it attractive for companies that are focused on 'channels' or 'push' products," says Philippe Courtot, Chairman, President and CEO of Verity, Inc.
"Autonomy's products deliver personalized information by enabling an ongoing dialog between the user and the information provider, this is missing from the Internet today. We are working with 'channel', 'casting' and 'push' providers to drive personalized information delivery, that is focused on the user, across the Internet," says Des Cahill, Autonomy Vice President of Marketing.
Easy to Use Multiple Applications
Autonomy's Agentware is easy to use because it understands plain English. Also, by using Neural Network technology, Autonomy's Agentware uses Agents which locate information based on concepts and context, thereby selecting the most relevant information according to the individual's preferences.
"Our approach to personalization is an ideal complement to the current 'push' information delivery models," says Chuck Swenberg, Autonomy Vice President of Business Development. "Autonomy's Agents are small, mobile and persistent, as well as being easy to create, launch and train. Their understanding of concept and context gives them the unique ability to identify, understand and deliver information in text or image formats. Our technology is also language independent, addressing the global nature of the Internet. We see Agentware 1.1 as a free-standing example of our personalization technology."
The Secret is in the Agent
Creating an Agent to work for you is easy. Simply name your Agent and train it by typing in a sentence or two in plain English. No complicated keyword-based query is necessary. The Agent can now be sent out to scour the Internet, bringing back a selection of relevant information. The Agent keeps learning about your user's interests and will adapt accordingly as your interests change.
Autonomy Agents are persistent. They can be used again and again, in stark contrast to conventional Internet searches. For example, a user interested in business travel information could create an Agent, name it "Traveler", and send it out to look for travel arrangement information based on their own designated personal preferences; such as hotels with gyms, swimming pools and gourmet restaurants. "Traveler" can be sent out at any time in the future to do additional research on any city you select, making your travel planning much easier and ensuring that your personal preferences will be met. In fact you can create multiple Agents, along with the number of pre-trained Agents included in Agentware 1.1.
Autonomy Agents are mobile. They can "live" on the user's PC (client) or on a publisher's Website (server) and travel from one to the other to perform tasks. Autonomy Agents are small, typically between two and four kilobytes. Their small size enables them to move quickly across the Web, Intranets or other client-server networks.
Agentware 1.1 includes six distinct services for your Agents to use. All feature a simple drag-and-drop graphical user interface designed for ease of use. Services include:
Web Researcher: a service enabling your Agents to research the Web
Press Office: an automated news service that utilizes online media resources to create personalized newspapers
Art Agent: a service that gathers images from the Web
Library: a service to store retrieved data on the user's hard drive
Agent World: a service on an Autonomy Agentware i3 server where Agents can be sent to search the Internet while the user is offline
Agent Dating: a service on an Autonomy Agentware i3 server where Agents can find other Agents with similar interests, creating dynamic affinity groups among users
Dynamic Reasoning Engine
Autonomy technology, including Agentware 1.1, is based on the Dynamic Reasoning Engine (DRE), a platform technology developed by Cambridge Neurodynamics Limited, a world leader in the commercial application of Neural Network and pattern recognition technologies based in Cambridge, U.K. The DRE has been successfully deployed in mission-critical applications in defense, law enforcement and other enterprises worldwide.
Autonomy, Inc. will release other client and server-based applications based on the DRE technology in coming months. Agentware 1.1 is now available for purchase at http://www.autonomy.com for Windows (95 and 3.11). Priced at $49.95. Agentware 1.1 will be available in retail outlets later this spring.
System Requirements
Agentware 1.1 requires a 486DX or better microprocessor running Windows 95 or 3.11; 8 Mb RAM (16 Mb recommended); 256 SVGA or better video display; 10 Mb of hard drive space; an Internet connection and a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator 2.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or better.
