Objectivity selects Virage to deliver image search for large-scale distributed applications

Distributed image search technology enables Web applications to scale to multiple servers SAN JOSE, Calif. -- February 18, 1997 -- At the Internet Expo Show today, Objectivity, Inc. announced its selection of Virage, Inc. to deliver full-image search capabilities within Objectivity/DB, Objectivity's scalable object database management system. Virage's advanced search engine provides image search technology that permits the high-speed search and retrieval of images including photographs, graphics, and video frames.

Web application developers, in particular, will benefit from the combination of Virage's image search technology and Objectivity/DB's facilities to manage distributed and replicated data.

Distribution enables large-scale image management "Objectivity customers today store large volumes of images in Objectivity/DB databases, but must provide their own solutions for image searches. By incorporating Virage's leading search technology into Objectivity's new media frameworks, we will allow our customers to deploy solutions faster," said William Evans, vice president of marketing at Objectivity. "Unlike other object databases, Objectivity/DB provides users with a single logical view of multiple databases, any of which may be replicated or distributed across heterogeneous platforms." added Evans.

"Objectivity/DB's facilities for data distribution and replication make it ideal for the deployment of large scale image repositories," according to Tom Stuart, vice president of marketing at Virage. "Virage's proven image search and retrieval technology provides a robust solution for Objectivity customers who need to manage large databases of visual assets." said Stuart.

"Image and video data is more demanding and complex than text, and needs the appropriate technologies for rapid and efficient storage and retrieval," said Steve McClure, director of object tools at International Data Corporation. "Objectivity/DB, coupled with Virage's proven distributed image search capabilities, meets these particular requirements." added McClure.

Objectivity's new media frameworks provides facilities for complete management of a variety of data types including text, image, audio and video. The integration of Virage's search technology provides for content-based retrieval both as users define new searches and as new images are committed to the database.

Consistent with Objectivity/DB's distributed architecture, the integrated technologies will permit a single image index to be distributed across multiple servers. This index can also be replicated for instantaneous access across geographically distributed servers, as is typical of web applications.
