Virage inks licensing deals for visual information retrieval technology with three multimedia companies

Pioneer in visual search and retrieval continues to set the standard for solutions combining images and databases

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- December 16, 1996 -- Strengthening its position as the emerging standard for image search and retrieval, Virage®, Inc. today announced three licensing agreements with companies involved in various aspects of the multimedia and digital asset management markets. The Bulldog Group Inc., Hi-Image and Media Center International, Inc. have each signed contracts with Virage to use its Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) technology in their respective solutions and applications. With these agreements, Virage continues to establish its VIR Image Engine as the technology-of-choice for finding and retrieving images from databases, the web and other collections of digital assets.

Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage, said, "Helping customers take full advantage of digital assets presents both an interesting technology challenge and a compelling market opportunity. Each of these three companies are tackling this challenge and delivering value to customers in their respective target markets. Virage is pleased to be an important part of the equation and work with these leaders as they continue to provide real solutions to image-intensive markets."

The Bulldog Group (www.bulldog.ca), one of the leaders in media and workflow management, has licensed the Virage Image Read/Write Toolkit for use in its Bulldog version One.Six Media and Workflow Management™ product. Bulldog One.Six is an enterprise-wide media asset management solution which integrates workflow processes to centralize, control and manage media assets. The target market for Bulldog One.Six is "The Media 200" -- the top 200 media-rich organizations across vertical markets such as entertainment (including film, video and gaming), pre-press, publishing and Internet services, as well as marketers and advertisers.

Hi-Image develops and markets products designed for producing high-quality graphics. The company has licensed the Virage VIR Image Engine for use in an image editing and retrieval system, called Picturama, that lets users organize and manipulate collections of photographs gathered from digital cameras.

MediaCenter is a leading systems integrator and full service media company specializing in multimedia asset management and electronic distribution of visual information. The company licenses Virage's VIR Image Engine and Image Read/Write Toolkit for use in its MediaMax™ system and MediaClub™ service.

MediaMax digitizes, stores, manages, distributes and tracks media assets such as still images, film, video and audio. The system's unique searching capabilities retrieve assets based on visual information as well as alpha-numeric attributes. MediaCenter has developed multimedia asset management prototypes for the Library of Congress and Sony Pictures Entertainment. For a demo of MediaCenter's search capabilities, select "DEMO" at www.mediacenter.com. MediaClub is an internet-based image search and retrieval service which enables users to access a collection of copyrighted still and moving images.

Virage licenses VIR technology as an easy-to-integrate product called the VIR Image Engine, which makes it possible to search for images based on their visual content and find images that look similar. The Virage VIR Image Engine analyzes an image, extracts its visual features, and compares it with other images to quantify similarity. The VIR Image Engine actually "looks" at the image and understands its features so users can ask the system to "find other images that look like this one".

This approach represents a significant leap forward in the way collections of digital images can be accessed, resulting in faster, more creative searches. Other companies licensing Virage's VIR technology include Eastman Kodak, Informix, Object Design, Oracle and PhotoDisc.
