Autonomy Provides Virgin Net Subscribers With the World's First Personalized Online Newspaper

Keeping abreast of news and information is about to become effortless and personalized with the launch of Virgin Autonomy, a revolutionary online personalized newspaper

November 12, 1996 - Virgin and Autonomy have announced plans to provide the world's first online personalized newspaper that is compiled according to the user's areas of interest and brought back in one omnibus edition.

Virgin Autonomy helps Virgin Net subscribers to stay in touch with specific stories and issues without the hassle of surfing through the newspapers and magazines available online. Virgin Autonomy brings subscribers the news and resources they want at any time of the day.

Using Virgin Autonomy is simple. The Virgin Net subscriber briefs Autonomy's enabling technology on the subjects they want to read about, and then confirms the sources they want searched. Virgin Autonomy uses Intelligent Agents to read every news source available to Virgin Net users before bringing back and assembling all the articles and information which cover the user's specified area of interest.

Virgin Autonomy can also work offline using a 'Kennel' service which is housed on the user's Virgin Net server. The Virgin Net 'Kennel' service is where an edition of the user's personal newspaper can be compiled without the user having to be connected to the Internet at the time.

Virgin Autonomy will be available to all Virgin Net subscribers as part of their subscription and is available in November 1996. Virgin and Autonomy will be announcing additional services in the new year. Autonomy has a range of other consumer products and services. Its Agentware™ includes: Web Researcher Agents that scour the Internet for useful information after training; Press Agent which delivers a custom-made newspaper to its owner compiled from online newspapers and magazines; Mail Agent which prioritizes and organizes E-mail; the Autonomy Library facility, and over 50 other pre-trained Agents. Autonomy is now available through major computer retail outlets and all major independent retailers and mail order specialists for £49.99 (inc. VAT).

Notes to Editors

Autonomy, based in San Francisco, CA with offices in Boston, New York, Washington D.C., New Jersey and Cambridge, England, are developers of unique Intelligent Agent applications and solutions for individuals and organizations operating in an online environment. Autonomy's staff were previously specialized researchers from Cambridge University in the area of pattern recognition and Neural Networks. They are responsible for the development of the pattern-based concept matches at the heart of the Autonomy product.

Virgin Net is an Internet Service Provider from the Virgin group of companies and International Cable Tel Inc., one of the largest telecom companies in the UK.
