Barclays In Deal With The World's Leading Intelligent Agent Developer

November 11, 1996 - Autonomy Systems Limited and Barclays Bank PLC today announced that the bank has adopted Autonomy's Intelligent Agent software technology as an analytical tool within the Emerging Markets Unit. Autonomy is the leading developer and marketer of Intelligent Agent software technology for the online world.

Barclays' Emerging Markets Unit evaluates leading edge technologies on behalf of the organization as a whole, and will be using Autonomy as an analytical tool for the Internet.

Autonomy launched a consumer retail version of its product for Internet users on November 8, 1996. The company based in San Francisco, California in the USA and Cambridge, UK has also developed revolutionary enabling technology for various online business services ranging from Internet Service Providers to content publishers.

The deal between Barclays and Autonomy is the first work group based deal for Autonomy. Bill Perry, Senior Project Manager of the Emerging Markets Unit said, "The Emerging Markets Unit of Barclays Bank PLC has a reputation of being the first to market with new technologies. We are pleased to adopt Autonomy's Intelligent Agent technology, particularly in light of the advantages it offers for centralized information mining and the benefits and competitive edge it will give our virtual teams." Simon Morris, Marketing Director of Autonomy, commented, "Our work for Barclays represents a significant step forward for the Autonomy brand within the corporate online world and is yet further endorsement of the status of Autonomy as leader in the Intelligent Agent market."

Notes to Editors

Autonomy is a company that has been hived down from Cambridge Neurodynamics (CNL). CNL was founded in 1990 by a group of Cambridge University scientists, headed by Dr Mike Lynch. It has been a pioneer in the development of Artificial Intelligence systems for computers. CNL develops its customized software primarily for corporate, government and defense institutions.

Using CNL's technology, Autonomy has developed software that can be used for information searches on the Internet. The software, which uses the pattern recognition capability of Neural Networks, incorporates "Autonomous Agents" which help a PC user in searching for data on the World Wide Web. These Autonomous Agents have the power of "dynamic reasoning," allowing them to think intelligently when searching for what the user requires.

Using this "initiative," the Agents can sift and assess, as well as retrieve information. The agents perform their searches continuously and can operate even if the user's PC is not online. Autonomy is also the first company in the world to provide intelligent software to the consumer retail market. The software is now available at PC World, Force Four, Silica, Forefront and all major independent outlets and mail-order specialists.

The retail version of Autonomy Agentware includes: - Web Researcher Agents that scour the Internet for useful information after training; Press Agents which deliver a custom-made newspaper to its owner compiled from online newspapers and magazines; Mail Agents which prioritize and organize E-mail; the Autonomy Library facility and over 50 other pre-trained Agents.
