Market-leading visual information retrieval technology to be integrated into future FlashPix-based products from Kodak

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- September 11, 1996 -- Virage, Inc. today announced that Eastman Kodak has selected Virage to provide the Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) technology that Kodak plans to incorporate into selected future products based on the FlashPix standard. Kodak announced the agreement at the Seybold Conference in San Francisco. (See Kodak release dated 9/11/96: Web Server Plug-in from Kodak Adds Resolution-Independent Imaging to Intranets.)

"Kodak is focused on making it much easier for consumers and professionals to find, retrieve and distribute digital images," said Scott Rafer, director, Digital Motion Networks for Kodak. "Virage and its intuitive Visual Information Retrieval technology will play a significant part in how we deliver on this promise. The combination of the FlashPix and Kodak Licenses Visual Information Retrieval Technology from Virage VIR technologies provide an incredibly strong foundation for Kodak to build upon and their value will be evident in new Kodak products that will be released in the near future."

FlashPix technology is a universal file format developed collaboratively by Kodak, Hewlett-Packard Company, Live Picture, Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

The technology provides numerous intuitive, easy-to-use image management capabilities and optimizes the editing of images.

Virage licenses VIR technology as an easy-to-integrate product called the VIR Image Engine, which makes it possible to search for images based on their visual content and find images that look similar. The Virage VIR Image Engine analyzes an image, extracts its visual features, and compares it with other images to quantify similarity. The VIR Image Engine actually "looks" at the image and understands its features so users can ask the system to "find other images that look like this one."

This approach represents a significant leap forward in the way collections of digital images can be accessed, resulting in faster, more creative searches.

Other companies licensing Virage's VIR technology include Informix, Object Design and PhotoDisc.

"Kodak has a forward-looking approach to the market and continues to set the standard in digital imaging technology," said Tom Stuart, vice president of marketing for Virage. "Kodak instinctively understands the value of our Visual Information Retrieval as an enabling technology and we're pleased to have them join the other market leaders who have endorsed the Virage technology as a means of helping users gain easy access to large collections of digital images."
