Virage continues to set the standard in multimedia asset management

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- March 25, 1996 -- Virage, Inc. today announced that Virage and Object Design, Inc. have signed an agreement whereby Object Design will license Virage's pioneering Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) technology for use in Object Design's newly-introduced Image Object Manager. The incorporation of VIR into Image Object Manager, part of Object Design's new Internet toolset, improves the retrieval of images from large collections by using the visual characteristics of images to perform more effective and intuitive searches.

"Virage has continually demonstrated technical excellence and delivers on the promise of visual information retrieval by allowing users to search based on an image's appearance," said Robert Goldman, president and

chief executive officer of Object Design. "With VIR technology, users can now easily access huge collections of images that were previously impossible or difficult to retrieve."

Virage's VIR technology taps the rich visual content of images, rather than keyword annotations, to perform searches through collections of visual assets to find images that are visually similar. To allow for the different needs of each search, the weighting of search criteria such as color, texture or composition can be adjusted to interactively refine the results. A VIR search can be combined with a keyword search in an application to yield even more powerful results.

"As more and more multimedia and image assets are collected, there is a growing demand for a more efficient way to manage digital image assets," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage, Inc. "Object Design has combined the strength of its object database with Virage's VIR engine to let companies quickly and easily turn image data into useful corporate assets.

Virage licenses VIR technology as an easy-to-integrate product called the VIR Image Engine. The VIR Image Engine performs the core duties of the search including analyzing images, extracting visual features and comparing them to quantify similarity. Other companies using Virage VIR technology include Illustra Information Technologies/Informix, which developed Visual Intelligence, a content-based image retrieval system that retrieves images from complex databases.

Virage, Inc. is the leading provider of products and technologies for Visual Information Retrieval for horizontal platforms including DBMS, information retrieval, Internet, and digital imaging, as well as vertical applications such as medical imaging, CAD imaging, trademark search, and digital video. Founded in 1994 and based in San Mateo, Calif., Virage pioneered the breakthrough technology of Visual Information Retrieval.

Object Design, Inc. (http://www.odi.com),

the leader in object data management software, delivers complete database solutions to organizations in the telecommunications, manufacturing, financial services and Internet markets. Object Design holds the largest share of the ODBMS market, according to International Data Corp. Headquartered in Burlington, Mass., Object Design has sales offices across the U.S., international subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Japan and a worldwide network of distributors.
