ObjectStore ObjectForms and Extended Object Management Suite help customers manage Web objects, languages

BURLINGTON, Mass., March 18, 1996-- Object Design, Inc. today announced seven new products that, combined with its ObjectStore object database, meet the requirements of new, dynamic Web applications. The new tools include ObjectStore ObjectForms, a development environment for Internet and Intranet applications, and a suite of six Object Managers that provide native support for text, audio, video, image, HTML data and Java applets.

ObjectStore's object data model is the only solution addressing the requirement of today's Web environment -- the need to support objects which encompass extended data types and their extended relationships. To create dynamic Web content requires the ability to retrieve objects, instantly search and assemble them on pages, and deliver those pages quickly to a Web site. ObjectStore's architecture manages extended relationships better than traditional database technologies that require data to be stored in tables. Only ObjectStore can meet the performance demand while managing highly interrelated data models like those required by Web applications.

ObjectForms and the Extended Object Management Suite are aimed at Web application developers who need to generate HTML pages, connect a database with standard Web servers, and support multimedia data types commonly found in Internet applications.

About ObjectForms

ObjectStore ObjectForms is a development tool for building new, interactive applications for the Internet and Intranet. ObjectForms supports on-the-fly HTML page generation, forms processing, high performance scaleable architecture options and connectivity between ObjectStore and all HTTP Web servers.

ObjectForms includes HTML tags that can be used to extend standard HTML files. ObjectForms reads the HTML tags to determine how to query or update ObjectStore, and then dynamically creates HTML to display the results.

ObjectForms is compatible with all HTML editors on all platforms.

ObjectForms enables ObjectStore to work with any industry standard Web server. It includes a dispatcher which provides load balancing and high throughput for high volume Web sites. This allows developers to build very scalable systems.

About Extended Object Management Suite

The Extended Object Management Suite is an integral part of Object Design's database solution for Web applications because it supports extended data types. It consists of six object modules (called Object Managers), that provide native support for video, audio, image, text, HTML and Java. Object Managers enable users to store, query, manipulate and reuse extended data types, and eliminate the need for developers to build their own libraries of objects. This saves time and money and allows businesses to get to market quicker with new applications.

In addition to providing the above capabilities, two Object Managers include additional benefits. The Image Object Manager includes a powerful query-by-content engine developed by Object Design partner, Virage Inc. It allows users to target an image, and then search for all similar images, such as in on-line clothing catalogues. The Text Object Manager comes with a full-text retrieval engine developed by Object Design partner, Verity, Inc. This allows for automatic indexing of all text which enables high speed word searches.

The Extended Object Management Suite is extensible enabling customers to develop their own Object Managers or tailor existing ones to meet their own needs.

"The products announced today, coupled with ObjectStore, provide a complete database solution for companies building dynamic Web sites and applications," said Robert Goldman, president and CEO at Object Design. "ObjectStore's ability to support extended object relationships will enable our technology to set a new standard for Web applications."

ObjectStore customers currently building Internet-related applications played a key role in the design and development of the Object Managers and ObjectForms. For example, Eastman Kodak Company is developing an extensible framework that will serve as the underpinnings in several upcoming Web-related products. ObjectStore is the underlying database for this framework.

"After an extensive evaluation, we selected ObjectStore because it proved to be the highest performing and most scalable database at managing the multimedia data types and complex relationships commonly associated with the Web," said Craig McGowan, project manager at Kodak. "With their Web and connectivity tools, Object Design provides a complete database solution for Kodak's application. This simplifies our efforts at building products that our customers can use with their existing infrastructures."

Pricing and availability

ObjectForms and the Extended Object Management Suite are available now on Windows NT and will be available on Sun Solaris in April, 1996.

Pricing for ObjectForms begins at $3,500 for one development license. This includes licenses for ObjectStore clients and servers and varies depending on class of machine and deployment options.

Pricing for individual Object Managers ranges from $395 to $2,695.

Object Design, Inc. (http://www.odi.com), the leader in object data management software, delivers complete database solutions to organizations in the telecommunications, manufacturing, financial services, and Internet markets. Object Design holds the largest share of the ODBMS market, according to International Data Corp.
