Industry Vertical: Manufacturing

Challenge

In today's volatile economy, manufacturers worldwide face the daunting challenge of satisfying increasingly discerning consumers in order to maintain and increase market share, while simultaneously countering fierce competitive pressures and reducing spending. Furthermore, customers are communicating with manufacturers across a raft of touch points making it increasingly difficult for companies to gain a true understanding of customer preferences, intent and purchasing behavior. Adding to the pressure, the last 24 months have seen a massive surge in the regulation targeted at manufacturers.

To maintain their competitive edge in this increasingly complex environment, manufacturers have to look beyond traditional means toward creating new value chains which encourage collaboration, reduce overhead and liabilities, speed products to market, and understand what products their target market desires. Forward-thinking manufacturers are turning to next-generation technologies to automatically identify customer trends and preferences, detect any emergent issues, and comply with regional and global regulations to ultimately outsmart the competition and boost their bottom line.

Autonomy's meaning-based technology helps manufacturers address these challenges and improve product quality, reduce costs, and deliver new products faster by bringing a deeper understanding of customer interactions, enabling unsurpassed collaboration between experts, and mitigating the risks endemic to data proliferation.

Manufacturers such as Agilent, BAE and Ford rely on Autonomy solutions to hone their competitive edge in today's fast-paced, global marketplace.

Solution Description

Information Access and Collaboration

Autonomy's meaning-based technology transforms teamwork and takes collaboration to a new level, linking experts across departments and geographies to significantly reduce resources allocated to the design, development, marketing, and distribution of new products. By bridging the information gaps throughout the enterprise and supply chain, manufacturers are able to increase their profitability while guaranteeing a speedy product lifecycle strategy.

By enhancing departmental, cross-departmental and enterprise-wide communication and information sharing, manufacturers create a productive synergy throughout the enterprise, which allows for quick response times to ever-changing consumer demand. Autonomy's manufacturing customers have employed our award-winning technology to virtually eliminate duplication of effort, as well as boost productivity and efficiency, resulting in smoother operations and project management.

Autonomy's core infrastructure software, the Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) provides a centralized hub to search all relevant content within the organization in a personalized manner whether it is for HR, development, marketing, legal, research, distribution and manufacturing. By automating the most critical processes including categorization, personalization, hypertext link management, and highly personalized information delivery, manufacturers are able to effectively re-allocate valuable resources to mission critical areas.

Key Benefits of Content Centralization

Provides collaborative workspaces and secure document management capabilities
Delivers instant access to content and collaboration tools to local and remote teams
Secures content to protect confidential information and unnecessary access
Automates processes associated with compliance guidelines

Business Process Management

Manufacturers struggle to strike the balance between growth and being lean, being global yet local, being speedy but ensuring quality, because many of the enterprise-critical processes are paper-based and difficult to manage. Automating the entire BPM cycle is the only solution that allows manufacturers to unify all paper-based processes throughout the enterprise, even processes in different departments, businesses and geographies. The reduction in human data entry, human errors and accelerated processing times are reflected immediately in the bottom line by a reduction of 60-80% from manual transcription.

Autonomy redefines BPM for manufacturers by accelerating product information lifecycles, ensuring compliance, and connecting people with information and processes regardless of language and location. In addition, Autonomy's market-leading enterprise search capabilities provide BPM automation with realtime access to, and use of, time-sensitive content throughout the process lifecycle, insuring a streamlined product-to-market workflow.

Information Governance for Reduction of Liabilities

Manufacturers are now able to leverage a solution which underpins many key business activities by ensuring that business information is efficiently controlled and that an organization knows what information it has, is confident in its accuracy, and that it is discoverable and quickly accessible. Records Management ensures that controlled information is only accessible to those with access rights and that it is duly retained according to corporate and legislative rules, after which it is appropriately disposed of. This ensures that sensitive data with new product design and development is monitored and properly stored, providing full control over the entire information lifecycle of creation, storage, retrieval, hold and disposal.

Key Benefits of Automating Records Management

Centralized policy management system from creation and retention to destruction
Automatic classification
Seamless integration with consolidated archives both on-site and hosted
Secure access to records

Meaning Based Marketing

As consumer demands become more unpredictable, marketers in manufacturing are under increasing pressure to research, locate, target and capture their audience before the competition does. The more marketers know about their customer, the more effectively they can serve them. But knowing who the customer is has become difficult as interactions take place across a multitude of touch-points in multiple formats, clouding the view and understanding of customers and markets.

Digital Asset Management

Manufacturers benefit from a centralized solution for management of logos, copy, video, images, presentations, and other rich media and digital assets and making them accessible to geographically dispersed teams. Autonomy provides the manufacturing industry the only commercial digital asset management system designed to work with "original" master assets: it dynamically generates variations or derivatives and delivers them on request and renders on-demand transformations quickly. This helps manufacturers throughout the product lifecycle allowing various teams across the enterprise to have a centralized hub for rich media content management.

Web Content Management

Manufacturers can leverage the only advanced content management platform in the market for creating, optimizing, and analyzing content across all internally and externally facing web-based business applications—portals, intranets, marketing websites, extranets, and self-service applications. They can:

Consolidate dozens of web properties into a single managed environment
Empower marketers to create, test, and analyze their own content and web initiatives
Reuse content across email, print, wireless, and the web for brand consistency
Automate content publishing with scheduled no-touch deployment
Enforce compliance with email-based workflows and archived web versions

Web Optimization

In an ever-so-competitive environment to capture the hearts and minds of customers, marketers in manufacturing require tools to learn from, understand, engage and retain their target market. Autonomy's web optimization software and services empower marketers to optimize their online presence to drive increased conversions, sales and customer engagement through

Multivariable Testing

Social Media Analysis

Autonomy provides manufacturing marketers with a sophisticated solution for discovering, analyzing, and acting on the massive amounts of user generated content throughout the web.

Integrate community with out-of-the-box social media applications
Monitor all forms of user generated content
Identify emerging trends from online conversations
Target content based on social media analysis
Leverage online reviews to validate offerings and drive revenue

Information Leak Prevention

The leak of data due to unauthorized transmissions is a critical concern for any manufacturer. Notwithstanding the legal consequences of breaching confidentiality and revealing trade secrets, any data released to outside recipients can lead to anything from loss of competitive advantage to brand damage. While it is possible to ensure that only entitled users have access to sensitive content, what users do when they actually have that content is a different matter. Autonomy provides a comprehensive and proven data security solution for archiving, protecting and tracking the flow of data. Leveraging a highly scalable and flexible consolidated archiving solution optimizes both long-term storage and allows immediate access for compliance and legal purposes. Furthermore, whether on desktops, laptops, or servers inside or outside the organization, Autonomy monitors logs and, if necessary, blocks prohibited actions by employees.

eDiscovery and Legal Hold

All industry sectors including manufacturing are experiencing a drastic shift occurring in the realm of Electronic Data Discovery, legal hold and litigation support propelled by mandates of the FRCP, penalties for failing to comply with the rules and staggering volumes of electronically stored information. Being in a very competitive environment, manufacturers are faced with endless legal matters and are seeking solutions to help respond to eDiscovery and legal hold requests urgently and take greater control of the legal discovery process.

Autonomy has significantly enhanced its product offerings to empower manufacturing legal teams to change the rules of the game in eDiscovery on a global scale, and in doing so, achieve greater control as well as lower cost and risk. Autonomy provides a systemized, repeatable and defensible process necessary to manage eDiscovery and legal hold for any cases, custodians, notifications, acknowledgements, preservations, collection, disposition, data maps and litigation lifecycles.

Key Benefits

Leveraging the most robust security model in the industry with proven, multiparty access
Single platform for the entire EDRM
Massively scalable and cost effective
Automated and comprehensive

Case Studies

Ford

The motor industry is under global pressure to improve productivity and business performance. Manufacturers are becoming highly focused on making operations as lean and efficient as they can be. As the Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) approached its 100th anniversary, it recognized from experience that its people were its most valuable asset. As the world's second largest automotive company, with brands including Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury and Volvo, the Ford Motor Company operates in 125 countries over 6 continents. With a vast, varied and distributed workforce, the challenge for Ford in achieving a lean and efficient strategic model was how to maximize employee effectiveness, without incurring significant cost.

Ford selected Autonomy because the implementation of Autonomy's infrastructure software negates the need for either a physical library or for additional people to be hired to catalog a virtual one. Autonomy's intuitive approach, analyzing patterns and identifying concepts within information, enabled speed and accuracy of information retrieval, which cuts hassle, reduces frustration and rapidly became habit-forming among users.

Toshiba

Toshiba America Business Solutions (TABS), an independent division of Toshiba Corporation, is the 5th largest electronics/electrical equipment company in the world. Their dealer extranet for placing orders and checking order status online proved burdensome to the company's understaffed IT department. TABS integrated the Autonomy Interwoven Web Content Management solution with its existing infrastructure to power the development and distribution of content for all of its external sites. Today, dealers have access to fresh, relevant content to help them aggressively sell more products. And TABS is saving more than US$350,000 annually in decreased web development and production costs because it no longer needs to print or mail marketing collateral.

BAE Systems

BAE SYSTEMS (formerly British Aerospace) is a systems company, innovating for a safer world. It employs 130,000 people, including joint ventures across 5 continents with more than 110 sites. It has annual sales of around £13 billion. BAE SYSTEMS designs, manufactures and supports military aircraft, surface ships, submarines, space systems, radar, avionics, communications, electronics, guided weapon systems and a range of other defense products.

What BAE SYSTEMS discovered was that over 80% of networked employees wasted an average of 30 minutes a day retrieving information, while 60% spent an hour or more duplicating the work of others. In addition, BAE SYSTEMS Virtual University, wanted a solution to a vexing problem: which technology would enable them to build a self-sustaining culture of learning and continuous improvement across the company through education, training and research. The software infrastructure chosen was Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) accessed initially through the Portal-in-a-Boxâ„¢ and most recently, the additional deployment of Autonomy's Collaboration & Expertise Networks (CEN) module. Autonomy at BAE SYSTEMS aggregates content from many sources in many different formats, structured or unstructured, including their intranet. The overriding goal was to personalize the delivery of that information to each user, and to eliminate work duplication and time-consuming searches.

Ericsson

Ericsson is a world-leading supplier in the telecommunications and data communications industry, offering advanced communications solutions for mobile and fixed networks, and consumer products. The challenge was to create a multi-lingual information portal, which Ericsson named Business Intelligence Centre (BIC) that anyone across the entire organization could use to find, and be pointed in the direction of, relevant information, intelligence and points of contact.

As a result, Ericsson needed a scalable system to automatically manage and disseminate vast amounts of data from thousands of internal and external sources – including the web, its own intranet and all the documents and emails stored in the company's network. Ericsson selected Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box™ and Active Knowledge™ to power BIC. The solution takes information from all those different internal and external sources and personalizes it automatically, according to users' interests and areas of expertise. Autonomy's technology allows Ericsson to automatically aggregate, categorize, hypertext link, personalize and deliver information across the enterprise to PCs, mobile phones and PDAs.

Johnson Controls Inc.

Johnson Controls Inc. is a global market leader in automotive systems and building facilities management and control. The company's traditional purchase requisition process, which is vital to meeting its manufacturing goals, used a three-part carbonless paper form. With 200 requisitions per month, it was taking too long—between 7 and 8.5 days, on average—to process each form. Johnson Controls selected Cardiff's LiquidOffice to streamline business processes. With Cardiff, Johnson Controls reduced the average processing time of online purchase requisition forms from eight days to three, while shortening the cycle for approvals and receipt of goods.

Chrysler Group

As one of the world's leading automotive companies, Chrysler Group manufactures and distributes cars, trucks and SUVs under three global brands: Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. The websites for each of these brands provide a wealth of information and functionality: customers can build and view more than 10 million possible vehicle configurations, search local inventories, access research data and learn about current incentives.

For several years, Chrysler Group had been seeking to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of its web content production. Autonomy Interwoven's Web Content Management (WCM) solution was selected due its reliability, ease-of-use, and ease-of-deployment. Since adopting Autonomy Interwoven's WCM solution, Chrysler Group has decreased production costs both for inside and external development, enabled closer tie-ins across multiple advertising media and accelerated online leads-to-sales.

Galam Group

Galam is Israel's leading fructose, glucose and starch manufacturer. The company provides most of the domestic industrial demand for these products, and is the largest supplier of fructose for Europe. Galam is based at Kibbutz Maanit, near Hadera. Galam recognized the importance of exercising control over all the business documents and records being produced and received within the business. This was a basic need for their knowledge management solution across the organization.

Galam was using the old system on a daily basis and there was a continuous need to use the system in support of current business processes, so it would be necessary to carefully manage the transition from the old system to the new one. Galam decided in September 2005 that Meridio's eDRM system met their functional and architectural requirements. This covered the specification of the solution requirements, the definition of needs and designing and building the organizational Fileplan, the development of the solution in a .NET environment, implementation and system acceptance plus training the users and the provision off on-going service and support
