Graduate Careers

Autonomy is one of the world's most dynamic and well established software companies, and if you see your future at the forefront of technology then you should consider a career with us. Autonomy is currently recruiting graduates from top universities, with the skills and mindset to succeed in a fast-paced environment.

At Autonomy you'll work with great minds and at the cutting edge of technology, whether pursuing innovative solutions for technical problems, developing new product features or liaising with clients. It takes genuine talent to succeed at Autonomy, and you'll be joining the undisputed leader in a rapidly growing and exciting new field.

What does Autonomy do?

The volume of digital information is increasing exponentially. It represents incredible value if it can be harnessed, and a potentially huge risk if not. Formerly, the rich quality of human information had to be reduced before computers could process it, for example, distilling a feature length video into a short, searchable text summary. Autonomy turns that on its head, allowing computers to handle the full richness of human information. It brings understanding to all information whether text, voice or video. This Meaning Based Computing represents a fundamental change in the IT industry. It's changing the way human beings deal with information and understand our world.

Headquartered in Cambridge and San Francisco, Autonomy is Europe's second largest pure software company, with over 20,000 customers including blue-chip and government organisations such as Bloomberg, HP, GSK, Shell, the BBC, Sony and Nissan. Autonomy is part of the Cambridge legacy, founded out of research at the university just over 10 years ago. R&D continues to be the largest department in the company, with over 170 patents behind it, and responsible for a significant number of industry-first solutions.

What is the company like?

Students are rightly cynical about employers who make attractive claims when the reality of the work is quite different. Obviously we think Autonomy is tremendously exciting, but it's important to us that you understand what Autonomy is like so that you can make an informed decision about whether it's right for you. So here are the facts:

Excellence is quickly rewarded at Autonomy, and we guarantee that you will be constantly challenged. From day one you'll be interacting with senior management, and with our top clients. Autonomy is not constrained by mountains of bureaucracy like other companies of its size, and the team works together to get the job done whatever it takes - so you won't always be doing the kind of things you'd expect. The company moves very fast. It's exciting and highly rewarding, and if you prove yourself you will accumulate experience of working to a very high level, across a wide range of operations and with a great deal of responsibility. People who've excelled at Autonomy frequently demonstrate superb leadership qualities and go on to become business leaders.

What would you do?

Software Developer
Autonomy's technical team works at the cutting edge of technology, pursuing new and unique approaches to solve technical issues or develop new product features. You'll work with great minds, and be encouraged to push the boundaries of what's possible. The team has an informal dynamic and the Autonomy office in Cambridge boasts widescreen TVs, games consoles, a pinball machine, table football, and in the tradition of our software peers Autonomy even provides a free lunch every Friday. Experience of programming, particularly in C, C# or Java is a useful asset here.
European Marketing Executive
The software industry is incredibly dynamic, and to be successful the marketing team has to be ahead of the game. It's a young and energetic team, and the task is incredibly varied: from designing advertising campaigns, planning events abroad, directing conference productions, speech-writing, investor relations and PR, to being directly involved in the development of new software demonstrations and products. The marketing role brings new, exciting challenges every day, and it will take you all over the world. We don't know of a marketing team in any large company quite like Autonomy's, and no marketing job in the industry is more rewarding.
Sales Engineer
Sales Engineers provide key technical support to the sales force in order to secure crucial contracts. The role necessitates close interaction with potential clients to describe Autonomy's technology to a varied audience. This is an extremely challenging undertaking that requires a quick learner, able to apply excellent problem solving skills under time pressure. You will get to know the technology inside-out and need to be highly motivated to get the job done to an exemplary standard. It's not a nine-to-five job but it's a role that will keep you interested and take you all over the world, working with leading companies.

What do our employees say?

"Autonomy's software has to be highly flexible in order to meet the needs of each particular client, and that demands a great deal of imagination and creativity from the development team. I find it incredibly satisfying to be working at the leading edge of technology and it is always thrilling to watch a new system go live after weeks of preparation" Colin McQuillan, Sales Engineer

Careers at Autonomy

As one of the most rapidly growing technology companies in the industry and a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, Autonomy is continually seeking outstanding individuals to join the team. Autonomy offers highly competitive salaries, bonus programs, world-class benefits, and unparalleled growth and development opportunities — all to create a compelling and rewarding work environment.

A dynamic internal communication process distributes relevant company information and encompasses a review and feedback process. Company performance and briefings normally take place on a quarterly basis in addition to the distribution of written updates and notices that communicate relevant news and information. Autonomy technology powers an internal Enterprise Information Portal and enables various groups such as sales, marketing and technical specialists to manage their individual information flow from both internal and external sources.

By fully supporting teamwork, which is the key element of our success, we strive to engender an internal environment that enables employees to achieve excellent performance and surpass even their own expectations. Because employees rely on each other's performance and support to achieve the Company's goals, all employees are enrolled in an Autonomy induction, training and education program within the first quarter of their employment. This program remains open for any employee who wishes to refresh their knowledge. In addition, product update webcasts are broadcast globally on a weekly basis.

As a high growth company, Autonomy sets high yielding and achievable performance targets for all employees and rewards them accordingly. A measurement and review process of each employee's performance contributions is undertaken regularly and if an individual fails to meet previously agreed standards and performance criteria, they are invited to participate in additional training and education. This process has proven to be very successful but inevitably, not everyone is able to make the grade in a high performance company.

We are proud of our company culture that has succeeded in driving Autonomy to the top of its class. Autonomy's lean business model has driven strong profitability for twenty seven consecutive quarters and continues to add to our cash reserves of over $199M. Furthermore, our business model ensures that in contrast to other companies who have been forced to make large layoffs and restructurings in the recent past, our team of approximately 900 talented individuals exceeds the performance levels of a company many times our size. Significant investments in research and development have ensured that we are primed for the future. We do not need to operate a continuous recruitment process but with modest growth of twenty people overall last year, we are always looking to hear from talented individuals who will help to take us still further.

Current Opportunities

As one of the most rapidly growing technology companies in the industry and a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, Autonomy is continually seeking outstanding individuals to join the team. Autonomy only hires candidates of the highest calibre, and in return, offers a generous employment package with a highly competitive salary and the opportunity for international travel. Successful candidates will find Autonomy a rewarding and stimulating working environment and benefit from significant opportunities for continued career development.

If you are looking for an exciting and challenging career with one of the leading IT companies in the world and hold a degree from a top university, we would encourage you to apply. Ambitious graduates from all disciplines are encouraged to submit their resume to recruitment@autonomy.com for positions in all departments including technical, sales, marketing, finance and administration.
